Vertical Studio: Ruins of Speculation – Redesigning the vacant Elbtower in Hamburg

In 2023, the real estate giant SIGNA, developer of the still unfinished Elb-Tower, declared bankruptcy and the construction of what was supposed to be the tallest landmark in Hamburg was brought to a halt, leaving the city with an enormous concrete shell adorning its harbor. The studio projects propose new futures for this ruin, imagining common-good oriented rules for developing it and redesigning the building in a way not representing dominance and power, but cooperation, social uses and environmental justice.
